Internet and Media Safety

This is an in-class workshop for students grades 4-7, lasting 1.5 hours.   It’s important to get students involved and active, talking and working on things while participating so they retain the information best.   I use a variety of methods to help introduce the ideas related to Internet and Media Awareness.

Topics:

  • Risks (including pressure, addiction, obsession)
  • Personal Information
  • Rules of Thumb (including information is forever and difficult to remove/erase)
  • Online chatting & gaming
  • Social Media (settings to protect, consequences of actions, etc.)
  • Images and Risks
  • Cyber bullying
  • Physical effects (posture, eyes, sleep)

Activities

  • Self-reflection quiz on media use
  • Internet chatting conversation script and finding all the personal information that a make-believe student innocently gave out
  • Students make posters for the class in review about smart media decisions and actions

How can I set this up at my school or in my class?
Click on the Contact link found on this website. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have, and find a time to offer it at your school! I can accommodate longer sessions as well as some customization.
